Send a common request
Provide identical goals, volumes and constraints. Ask what is included and what costs extra. Quotes based on different assumptions cannot support a fair comparison of headline prices. Record each agency’s exclusions and dependencies.
Request concrete evidence
Open a delivered site, test a mobile journey and ask who maintains it. Review anonymised handover documentation where available. A visual award is not a security certification or an SEO guarantee; evaluate those responsibilities separately.
Assess post-delivery work
Define correction times, backups, updates and exit arrangements. Clarify licences for media and components. Include recurring costs even when a third-party provider receives the payment directly. A cheap build can leave substantial ongoing work.
Agree acceptance before signing
Write acceptance criteria and a process for resolving discrepancies. Weight the journeys that matter to the business. Retain notes and evidence so the team inheriting the site can understand the decision.
- Align brief
- Inspect evidence
- Cost maintenance
- Agree acceptance
Worked example
Suggested matrix: fit 30%, journey quality 25%, maintenance 20%, ownership and exit 15%, complete cost 10%. These weights are an adaptable starting point, not a standard or a rating awarded to an agency.
