Inventory the source
Identify format, approximate duration and visible condition. Avoid forcing playback of a damaged tape; seek appropriate assessment. Record provenance and rights, especially where identifiable people appear in private material. Keep each item’s identifier through the transfer process.
Specify deliverables
A playback DVD and a preservation file offer different reuse possibilities. Ask about formats, dimensions, frame rate and intended treatment. Restoration filters can change appearance; retain a description of interventions rather than treating every enhancement as neutral.
Check the result
Inspect beginning, middle and end, audio continuity and duration. Compare an identifiable passage with the source where possible. A completed technical copy does not establish that sequences are complete or files are named correctly.
Plan preservation
Keep separate copies, an inventory and metadata. Periodically verify that files open and remain unchanged. Private video does not become publishable simply because it was digitised; assess rights and access as separate decisions.
