SMS marketing: plan around genuine permission

SMS reaches a personal channel. Before discussing performance, check permission, message relevance and a simple way to stop further marketing.

Define audience and purpose

Separate operational messages from promotion. Do not use a delivery notice as a pretext to append an offer without reviewing applicable rules. Explain why this channel helps this person at this moment instead of sending indiscriminately to an entire database.

Verify permission

For consumer electronic marketing in France, CNIL describes prior consent as the general rule, with bounded exceptions. Creating an account alone is not a completed sale. Retain evidence and assess the actual situation before sending. Rules elsewhere require local verification.

Make the message understandable

Identify the organisation, purpose and destination. Test links and length, and provide simple opposition. Avoid shortcuts that obscure the destination or fabricated urgency. Readers should understand the offer before opening a link rather than discovering an unexpected sales journey.

Review and reduce nuisance

Track replies, opt-outs and complaints as well as clicks. Set frequency and stopping rules. Maintain an appropriate suppression list so a person is not resubscribed during the next import.

Worked example

Pre-send checks: defined audience, verifiable permission, clear identity, tested link, functioning opt-out and follow-up owner. Test removal using an authorised team number before launching a campaign.

Check before moving on
